Lucifer doesn’t have an exclusive. He just offers the subscriber cover.
True story: When I went to my local comic shop to pick up my reserved issue, I couldn’t bring myself to accept the subscriber cover. I instead swapped it for ANY FREAKING COVER THAT ISN’T THE SUBSCRIBER COVER.
To answer your first question, yes, that is Reef and I. He probably looks like the Doctor because the reference picture I sent to Jet was him cosplaying. Yeah, that’s how often he has his picture taken. Also, with a not-so-keen eye, and reference material from his Tumblr, you can spot Jet somewhere in here.
I do enjoy issue #1. It’s a fun romp with a lot of references specifically for the audience that everyone expects to buy it. But for that very same reason, it also comes off a bit fan-comic-y. Good fan-comic-y, but fan-comic-y none the less.
I’m a huge proponent of fan work capturing the spirit of the source material, and while the comic certainly has humor, the pacing and over-emotion is like watching an episode of Invader Zim or Fanboy & Chum Chum. It’s difficult to build to zaniness while keeping a grounded plot. The comic sidesteps this aspiration while the show achieves it extravagantly.
Still, I have no intention of killing my subscription any time soon. As I said, it’s fun. It’s not best, it’s not fantastic, but it’s silly and cute, and that’s all I really expected from it in the first place.
